Hav & Himmel – Sea & Sky

Exhibition poster: 'Sea & Sky' by Ambeck Design (2015).

The last book arts exhibition at Doverodde Købmandsgård (former Limfjordscentret) was the joint exhibition between Linda Newington (UK) & Mette-Sofie D. Ambeck (DK) – May 19th-June 28th, 2015.

As a result of Linda Newington's residency at Doverodde Købmandsgård in May of 2014, she returned in May 2015 to exhibit a series of watercolours.
Drawings from her many walks along the North West coast and over 40 watercolour samples painted during the residency was the source for new paintings of light, skies, horizons and the dramatic sunsets seen at Agger beach and Tange.

Meanwhile Mette-Sofie D. Ambeck's work derived from a fascination with the fossilised sea urchins that are commonly found in the area of North Jutland where she lives and work. Fossils which she has collected since childhood. These are the subject of many myths which reflect the Norse legends.
As well as a series of six large photographic prints incorporating text there were three new book works especially created for this event:

On the floor: 'Sun'. On the wall from the left: 'Five pointed star',  'A drop of milk''Good luck starman' and 'Thor's fireball' – photographs on canvas by Mette-Sofie D. Ambeck (May 2015).

9 of the 12 pop-ups which were considered to be bound after the exhibition into one unique book: 'Pop-pindsvin/Pop-urchin'.

'Pop-urchin' page: Paradisko/Paradise cow by Mette-Sofie D. Ambeck (2015).

A unique 'pop-up' book expressing the Danish names given to sea urchins and the storage English translations of same (i.e "Petrified lake stick swine" or a "prude trollop"). The title of the book was going to be: 'Pop-pindsvin / Pop-urchin' and was going to be bound after the show ended on June 28th – but new thoughts are in progress.

'Stonedrops' by Mette-Sofie D. Ambeck (2015).

A second book work that comprises two pamphlet sections shaped like the urchins carrying the myths connected to them (that they fell from the sky) and which are hung as mobiles within the gallery space. The title of the installation is: 'Rain' while the individual books are 'Stonedrops'.

'Rain' by Mette-Sofie D. Ambeck and wall behind watercolours by Linda Newington.

The third book work was a joint print-on-demand artist’s book: ‘Hav & Himmel – Sea & sky’ which was launched at the opening on May 19th.
The book combines both artists work – watercolours and b/w photography.

Finally a floor installation was created using sea urchins belonging to Doverodde Købmandsgård. The installation was called: 'Sun'.

– by the Nordic artists group CON-TEXT

A touring artists' books exhibition created by 33 Nordic artists from Denmark, Finland, Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The exhibition revolves around the concept of "HOME" - the actual home, the accommodation, but also broadly speaking about identity, the feeling of homeliness and recognition.
The concept of "home" coincides to some degree with the term "accommodation" but not entirely. Home expresses a sense of belonging; it's where you belong, it's your base and your point of existence.

Where is my home? What or where is "home" to me? Is it the place I grew up? A given area/location/feeling/the family home/or??? Does the home reflect a particular nature/culture/neighbourhood? What values must be present in order for me to feel at home. "Home" is perhaps not a concrete house or a place, but something completely different? Perhaps it means "home" to be present/in the moment/to be home in ones body/mind?

– by Imi Maufe

LK243 UnderSail is the response to a residency on board the Swan, a Shetland herring drifter from 1900, during the Tall Ships Races 2011. Imi Maufe sailed with the boat for 5 weeks, from Waterford, Ireland to Halmstad, Sweden via Greenock, Scotland; Lerwick, Shetland and Stavanger, Norway. During this time she cast into the sea 43 wooden postcards. The eight that were found along with prints, books and other artefacts have been housed in a bunk box. This bunk box was specially designed to fit at the end of the bunk, the only private space that Imi had during the Voyage.
During the voyage – when the boats arrived in harbour – Imi also collected 500 drawings or writings of boats from the general public and crew of the participating ships. Some of which are displayed as concertina books and more can be found in the bunk box.
Part two of this residency was four weeks based on at Taigh Chearsabhagh Arts Centre, North Uist and Shetland Arts Development Trust in Lerwick finalising work.
